BMW says the design and technology of its two-seat Vision ConnectedDrive concept roadster are aimed at making the vehicle an integral part of a networked world. It is, perhaps, the ultimate social networking machine.
With the long hood of a classic sports car and a competition-style windscreen, the Vision ConnectedDrive looks muscular. BMW, however, makes no mention of the vehicle’s powertrain; the high-performance equipment featured here is electronic. Some of that electronic equipment is, in BMW parlance, layered, meaning that components perform more than one task. In that spirit, the headlights and taillights are integrated with sensors that monitor traffic and, rather archly, “the environment.”

The cabin is subdivided into three distinct areas by fiber-optic lighting. A heads-up display is said to fuse the actual view of the road ahead with virtual content. The co-pilot — that would be the front-seat passenger — can review a stream of data that, if deemed worthy of the driver’s attention, can be forwarded to the instrument panel.

That is actually what they call this car! BMW Z4 with new Equipment Package Pure Design Balance is on display at the Geneva Motor Show as we speak, as a further interpretation of the successful sporty roadster.

You might be struggling to realize what’s new on this car, and we can’t blame you. But it comes with Mineral White metallic, which is offered for the first time with the Z4 as part of the Design Pure Balance package. Alternatively you can go for other non-metallic and metallic exterior paint finishes.

This package is more about the interior. It’s been fitted with fitted with leather in the attractive new colour Cohiba Brown, with contrasting seams in Lotus White. The package is rounded off with additional black leather features featuring seams in Umbra, Fineline Anthracite wood and sports seats as standard.

The coupe is a 3-series that has undergone tuning by BMW M, the car maker's motorsport division. The latest model now equipped with a Competition Package as standard that improves on the current driving dynamics but more on that later.

The 2011 BMW M3 is huge. Once you're settled inside, you feel as if your human presence is overshadowed, intimidated, especially with that innocuous M button staring at you. Still, the 2011 BMW M3 surprises because it is actually very easy to drive at city speeds and therefore, easy to live with on a daily basis.
I had no trouble cruising around tight HDB carparks, sometimes attracting a stare or two with the deep, rumbling V8 engine. A lightened steering wheel at low speed helped. The 2011 BMW M3 has a smooth, if somewhat rumbly, city drive even in Normal driving mode. I did without the Comfort mode, the third leg in the electronic damper control for the M3. The sports seats in front were cushy and yet provided ample lateral support, a reminder that these vehicles are still track cars.

We liked the weighted steering that added a sharpness to the driving dynamics. Despite its track intentions, the suspension will be easy on your bones as it levels out road bumps that our engineers have forgotten about. A Comfort driving mode exists should there be a need to soften the handling further. Gear shifts were silky-smooth with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission but when required, a touch of the accelerator will bring you up to speed.

The regular 2012 model year 1-Series Coupe and Convertible models have finally being unveiled following the presentation of BMW 1-Series M Coupe recently. The models which have been updated have received no major mechanical makeovers. The 135i received the N55 twin-scroll turbo engine in spring 2010. BMW has given more importance to subtle design and improved aerodynamics of the car including refinements to various controls of the car. A new set of exterior paint colors, and upgraded upholstery and interior trim are also on offer from BMW.
They have kept the new exterior design short and crisp. The headlights have been modified and rear lights have been equipped with LED strips. A new set of design has been introduced to the 17-inch alloy and 18-inch alloy wheels and two new paint finishes has been introduced, namely Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown.

The 2012 BMW 650i Convertible is smoother and less polarizing than the car it replaces. BMW is no doubt hoping the new design will help renew interest in the car, as the present 6 Series coupe and convertible have sold just 2348 units through November of this year, down from 3346 cars during the same period in 2009. You can draw your own conclusions about what’s caused the car’s low sales but if you think styling might be to blame, let’s compare the two cars.

Still an imposing car, the 2012 BMW 6 Series has pulled-back headlights without the thick “headlight eyelashes” of the 2010 car. The trademark BMW grille is large and vertically positioned, lending the car more of an executive look.

BMW has disclosed that its newly introduced X3, which marked the second generation of the vehicle since it was introduced in 2004, has been enhanced with new technology capable of establishing new benchmarks for agility, efficiency and comfort in its segment.

BMW said the design of the new X3 conveys elegance, agility and ruggedness, noting that the forward-slanting BMW kidney grille and large headlight assembly combine with a powerful-looking front apron and hood boasting six contour lines sweeping down to meet at the kidney grill, giving the X3 a bold presence, while the twin round headlights combined with the round fog lamps form the triangular light pattern that is characteristic of BMW SAV design.

The automaker said the upper edge of the headlight assembly sports an accentuating chrome trim, creating the focused design typical of BMW vehicles, while its signature ‘Corona Rings’ are again illuminated to function as the daytime running lights, adding that when equipped with the optional Xenon headlights, the Corona Rings and daytime running lights are illuminated by bright white LEDs.

BMW, a brand that prides itself on building the ultimate driving machine, doesn’t have a genuine supercar in its lineup. But this was not always the case because back in 1978 BMW launched its very own supercar. It was the mid-engined M1 homologation special, a car that made its debut more than 30 years ago at the 64th Paris Auto Show and went on to sell in several different variants until it was discontinued just three years later.

The M1’s body was based on a 1972 BMW concept car but was penned by Italian design house Giugiaro Italdesign and developed by BMW Motorsport with the help of Lamborghini. At the time of its launch, it was one of the fastest and most dynamic cars on the market. It featured a 277 horsepower 3.5-liter straight-six engine and could reach speeds in excess of 160 mph. The car's smooth six-cylinder revved freely to a 7,000 rpm cut-off and was capable of accelerating the M1 from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds.

the BMW brand new 5 Series sedan and its sold out in both Europe and in the US market. This is barely a month after its sales started in Europe and it was even faster in US where it went in a week, that the F10 were all sold. There is a waiting period of three to four months now for further deliveries.

BMW’s sales head, Ian Robertson mentioned at a conference in Bilbao , Spain that they had anticipated this sort of sales due to the fact that the 5 series has been BMW’s core object always. He also added that they expected by the end of the entire sales business they would be able to lap up about 15 to 17 percent of the market share.

Analysts attribute this massive crave for this 5 series models from BMW to its less divisive styling. This was stated by Georg Stuerze from Unicredit in Munich. He felt that the car held a stark resemblance to the extent of 70 percent with the flagship of BNMW the 7 series.

2010 has been the development of the upcoming 2012(?) BMW M5.
From spy photos to information, it seems as though there is a story about the M5 every waking moment.

But now it looks like it is going to have some competition by way of the upcoming M6.

The heavily camouflaged mule was spotted roaming about sporting the obvious M signs: massive brakes and quad exhaust.

Although the writer of this post seems to imply we could be getting a look at the first shots of the 6-Series hard-top convertible, don't be fooled. Take a look at the B-pillars closely. You can see that they are quite large and even have an interior lining. Sorry to burst the bubble, ladies and gentlemen.

And, before you run to look at the shots I think it would be wise to advise any enthusiasts expecting upwards of 600-horsepower to pump the brakes. BMW has put out products with less power than the competition and I would not be surprised to see them do it again.

For example, the E92 M3 was said to have upwards of 450-horsepower yet look what we wound up getting. But knowing BMW, the sky's the limit...

We bring you the world's first peek at the upcoming F12 M6 coupe (or perhaps hardtop convertible)! The telltale sign here are the quad exhausts, huge brakes, and cross-drilled rotors. This prototype wears camoflage body panels and the front bumper is that from the standard F12/F13 6-series that we've seen. However, the wheels appear to be upgraded 19" versions with some beautiful high concavity.

BMW released the xDrive all-wheel-drive version of the 2011 5-series sedan based on the six-cylinder 535i and eight-cylinder 550i models. The 2011 535i and 550i xDrive Sedans start from $52,775 and $62,875, respectively which is $2300 more than what you pay for the RWD equivalent. So unless you live somewhere with frozen lakes for roads you better save the $2300 and get a normal 5er!

Crimson red with a cream beige interior, the subject of this weekend's road test turned heads and induced smiles.

"Now that is one that I would spend my own money for," said our younger-generation parking garage attendant/car buff as he broke into a wide smile. That was not an insignificant comment since he sees virtually all of the test vehicles.

"That is one pretty car," said the man fueling up his SUV next to the BMW here in Damascus.

And so it was throughout the week. Somewhat amazing actually, in that the basic design of the 3-series BMW hasn't changed much in recent times.

In fact the major change in the 2011 model is not visible until you open the hood and see the new turbocharged 3.0 liter six. It develops 300 horsepower at 5,800 rpm with peak torque of 300 lb-ft from 1,200 to 5,000 rpm with a 7,000 rpm red line. Our test car was EPA rated at 19-25 mpg of premium petrol. I got 22 mpg.

BMW claims that the new engine burns cleaner, and produces better gas mileage than the previous turbo six. And it is about 150 pounds lighter; no bad thing since reducing automobile weight is the top goal of designers these days in order to improve gas mileage while enhancing performance.

The maker quotes a zero to 60 time with the 6-speed manual of 5.3 seconds and I have no quibble. There is no real "get acquainted" time needed with this smooth gearbox and lightweight clutch. You become just about instant friends.

Top speed is 130 miles per hour, and that increases to 150 if you check the optional sport package.

To celebrate the 25th year of the ultra-popular M3, BMW just announced a new limited edition version of the race-bred sports car for the United States. The 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe is very limited, actually, with only 30 of them being made. So what’s so special about this edition?

Well, the “Frozen Gray” in the name probably gave away that it’s an exclusive color. Come on BMW, you get free reign on any color in the palette and you choose gray for the special edition? According to them it’s no ordinary gray; Frozen Gray is a “special matte-gray paint with a deep metallic luster to further accentuate the athletic lines of the legendary M3. To achieve this luster, a special BMW ColorSystem silk matte clear coat is applied over the Space Gray Metallic base coat.” Sounds fancy. But still…gray? Inside, lucky buyers of limited M3 get a unique Fox Red / Black bi-color Novillo leather interior with carbon leather trim.

25 years is a silver anniversary, and a big milestone for a nameplate to reach. 25 years just so happens to be approaching for one of the most recognizable performance models for enthusiasts since its introduction, the BMW M3.

Of course, it wouldn’t be 25 years without a special edition model, and BMW has released just that to commemorate the occasion. It is dubbed Frozen Gray.

The color is – you guessed it – gray. As far as the car’s appearance, the unique color and special 19-inch wheels are the only differences over the standard M3. It looks cool, but perhaps not as exciting as another special edition M3 model, the orange GTS. Unfortunately, that car didn’t make it to our shores.

Inside, there is Fox Red and black two-tone Novillo leather. Beyond that, the Frozen Gray Special edition stays the same. The Frozen Gray M3 comes standard with BMW’s M dual-clutch transmission, and isn’t available in manual-transmission guise.

If you want to buy one, orders start on Monday, June 21st at 11:30 AM Eastern Standard Time. Be prepared to fork out the cash – $77,600.

The new ActiveHybrid 7 is part of BMW's new line of hybrid cars. Unlike the more complex dual-mode system in the ActiveHybrid X6, the 7's system is designed to get the most from hybrid technology's ecological and fuel economy advantages while reducing the power, weight, and space penalties of more complex systems.

As a result, the car is only 165lbs heavier than a normally equipped 7, and the lithium ion battery takes up only 1.4 cubic feet of trunk space. However, this limits the system's electric capabilities. While the X6 has two large motors that can push the car on electric power alone at low speeds, the 7 makes due with a single small motor and cannot move without using the gas engine.

The 8-speed ZF transmission is the same as found in the regular 7, but a smaller torque converter and higher gear ratios have been fitted to take advantage of the electric motor's low-speed torque. The motor itself sits between the engine and transmission adding 55 hp and 65 ft-lb torque for a total of 440 hp and 455 ft-lb torque when combined with the car's twin turbo V8. While it shares this engine with the regular 750, the ActiveHybrid can reach 60 mph half a second faster than its non-hybrid stablemate. EPA figures have not yet been released, but it's expected that this car will get 15% better fuel economy than base 7.

The gas engine runs when the car is first started, allowing start-stop mode only once the car has moved. The switch between regenerative and friction braking is seamless, something rarely seen in even the best hybrids. When this happens, the tach turns blue, indicating power regeneration instead of revs.

Unlike other hybrids, exterior cues identifying this model are limited to special aerodynamic wheels and a small "ActiveHybrid" badge on the rear. A new electric air conditioning system has been added with coolant lines running to the battery to keep it cool while also keeping passengers comfortable while the gas engine is off. Oddly, the ActiveHybrid doesn't have electric power steering. Whenever the wheel is turned, the engine has to start up to provide power for the steering pump, using fuel and giving a brief feeling of heaviness to the wheel.

Nissan may create performance line for Infiniti like BMW M-series

Nissan North America may soon create an performance line for Infiniti, similar to rival Mercedes-Benz's AMG models, BMW's M, Audi's S and Cadillac's V alphabet-souped-up versions of their cars, according to a report in Autoweek.

Nissan has filed with the feds to trademark the names "IPL" and "Infiniti Performance Line." According to application documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the IPL trademark cover use of "high-performance motor vehicle parts," including turbochargers and superchargers and performance exhaust, suspension and systems.

Autoweek said a spokesman at Infiniti's U.S. HQ in Franklin, Tenn., declined to discuss the trademark or product, but that this month the VP of the Infiniti Business Unit, Ben Poore, told reporters he intends to reveal a new performance-oriented offering this summer.

BMW announced that its most fuel-efficient and greenest 3-Series ever completed a record-breaking journey from the UK to Munich and back on one tank of gas. Fueled up and ready to go at the Channel Tunnel, the new 2010 BMW 320d EfficientDynamics sedan made it to Munich and back – a total of 1,013 miles on a single tank of fuel.

The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics was piloted by Tom Ford (of Fifth Gear) who averaged a combined figure of 57 mpg and CO2 emissions of only 109g/km. On his way to Munich, Tom was achieving a 63 mpg and said that he didn’t hit below 54 mpg the entire trip.

Luxury BMW carjacked in Sydney CBD

A man was carjacked at gun point in the CBD last night, with two masked men demanding the keys to his BMW. It is the second BMW carjacking in five days.

Police said about 9.40pm, a 31-year-old man was getting something out of the boot of his blue BMW M5 sedan, parked on Elizabeth Street near King Street.

"It is alleged a silver-coloured BMW stopped near his car before two men wearing balaclavas exited the vehicle and approached the victim," a police statement said.

Early rumors about a 5-Series diesel making it to US soil have finally been confirmed by a BMW official. According to the new report, the diesel-powered BMW 5-Series will debut in the United States for sure.

As stated by Inside Line, the BMW official has not provided any details about which engines will head for US shores, but it is speculated that the U.S. market will get the 3.0-liter diesel engine found on the 530d. The 265 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque seems quite ideal for the new 5 Series and has already been calibrated to pass U.S. 50 state emissions regulations. The engine gives 0-62 mph in 6.3 with a top speed of 155 mph.

Here's something new: For once North America will be getting a special performance edition of a popular European model that the Europeans won't receive (at least for now). This performance edition shall be known as the 335is and it comes courtesy of our friends at BMW North America.

The is ("i" for injection, as in fuel, and "s" for sport, as in fun) follows a tradition of s-badged sport-enhanced models, including the 320is, 325es, 325is, 535is, and most recently, the X5 4.6is and 4.8is.

This 335is features a massaged version of the N54 turbocharged inline six and an array of M Sport accoutrements to put it on a tier above the current 335i.

In spite of the recent revelation of BMW's next-generation turbo six (the single-turbo N55), the 335is will employ the more familiar N54 twin-turbo. Precision fuel injection, Double-VANOS stepless valve timing, and an advanced Digital Motor Electronics (DME) control system collaborate to push peak power from 300 to 320 hp, and torque from 300 to 330 lb-ft. There's also an overboost function that briefly kicks the peak torque to a massive 370 lb-ft under hard acceleration in "certain circumstances." (We love those kinds of circumstances.)

Other engine upgrades are placed to compensate for the increased performance, like an additional radiator behind the left side bumper intake, an oil cooler behind the other intake, and stiffer engine mounts.

The 335is comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission, or, for the first time on a non-M car, the seven-speed DCT automated manual (which includes a launch control function) as an option.

While all 3 Series coupes and convertibles have received a midlife facelift for the coming model year-including massaged body panels and front and rear light clusters-M Sport styling cues vistually set the 335is apart from its more pedestrian siblings, including a front fascia and side skirts designed to move more air to critical locations, a rear fascia with diffuser, standard Shadowline window trim, gloss-black side mirrors, 335is badges on the front quarters, and standard 18-inch wheels (19s are optional). On the inside, the M Sport upgrades include the steering wheel, sport seats, an anthracite-colored headliner, stainless steel pedals, 335is branding on the dashboard and tachometer, and M-branded sill plates, dead pedal, and gearshift knob.

The gloves are off now, though, with BMW confirming at a media event this week that the magnificent new 5 Series also will be available to U.S. buyers with one of BMW's magnificent turbodiesel engines. The company won't yet say which diesel — or when.

But for compression-ignition aficionados, the news gets even better. BMW is planning to give us diesel power for another as-yet-unnamed model, too.

Willem Rombauts, product manager for the 5 Series, X5 and X6, said two more models in the U.S. will offer diesels. "The 5 Series will definitely be one of them," he revealed.

Currently, the 330d and the X5 xDrive35d are the only two U.S.-spec models fitted with diesels. Both use BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel that generates 265 horsepower and a sinful 425 pound-feet of torque. Both have been on sale since 2008. Neither, however, has recorded the kind of sales numbers that make the accountants back in Germany break out with spontaneous yelps of Wagnerian rapture.

The Mille Miglia, the road race from Brescia, Italy, to Rome and back that began this week, marks the 70th anniversary of the year BMW swept the race’s top spots in 1940. To commemorate, the company has entered what it describes as a contemporary replica of the so-called 328 Kamm Coupé. The replica was unveiled at the recent concours d’elégance at the Villa d’Este on Lake Como.

In the 1940 race, BMW’s 328, with its powerful in-line six, won the top spot and took third, fifth and sixth places, although the Kamm Coupé didn’t finish the race because of mechanical problems. Another 328 tied to that race, the 1937 BMW 328 MM ‘Bügelfalte,’ or trouser crease, named for its sharp fenders, was offered at RM’s auction in Monaco on May 1. Bidding on the car reached 4,300,000 euros, or $5,835,100, but because it did not exceed the reserve the vehicle remained unsold. Instead, it was purchased privately the next day.

The 1940 race was in April. But France would fall in May, which kept most participants away from the Italian road race. The result was a battle of the Axis powers, with five silver BMW 328s set in a sea of Italian Fiats, Lancias and Alfa Romeos. (Two blue French Delages were driven by Italians.)

The 328 was given many different bodies, and models varied a good deal. All used space frames with thin aluminum bodies. The Italian company, Touring, provided bodies using its trademark superleggera system of tubes and skin. The cars also helped demonstrate the idea of a streamlined, closed racer using aerodynamics to optimize power and handling.

Platform: Internally called the F30, the next 3-series is based on a new compact, rear- and all-wheel-drive architecture. Like today’s lineup, expect a station wagon, a coupe, and a hardtop convertible. They will be joined by a hatchback version similar to the recently introduced 5-series GT.

Powertrain: BMW will continue to sell an inline-six version, but also expect turbocharged fours, which could make upward of 300 horsepower. The M3 is likely to lose the V-8 in favor of a 400-plus-hp turbo six.

Competition: Acura TL, Audi A4, Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-class.

What might go wrong: After the styling excesses and inconsistencies of the past decade, the new 3-series might end up ugly and possibly unloved. Ah, who are we kidding?

Estimated arrival and price: First view happens at the 2012 Geneva auto show or maybe a few months earlier. Prices remain in the $35,000-to-$50,000 range. The new 3 goes on sale in the fall of 2012.

Even through the dark economic downturn, and the auto industry subsequently floundering as a whole, it's sort of amazing the variety of vehicle species we continue to enjoy. And they seem to just keep coming.

Enter the 550i Gran Turismo, a seemingly whole new automotive genus-visually at least. What is it exactly, what does it do? Haul you, three of your best friends, and your things for a weekend or week-long getaway? Yes. Haul kids, groceries, IKEA, ass? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Is it an SUV? No. Is it a crossover, sport sedan, or both? Sort of, sort of, and most likely, yes-it's a crossover sport sedan. Or something like that.

Confused? Don't be. At its core the 550i GT remains distinctly a BMW automobile-not a BMW SAV. It's based on the new 7 Series platform, as will be the new 5 Series sedan.

Even so, it seems something entirely different from either the 5 Series or the line of BMW SAVs-and a rather distinctive, and when you come down to it, rather deft grafting of the two. You might not like the way it looks at first-I have to admit I still think it looks kind of weird-but in the words of that old cliché, it really seems to offer the best of both those worlds.

Granted, it's probably not quite as utilitarian as the X5, but seems at least as good as an X6. And in fact, it's said that the GT actually has more headroom than an X5-and headroom can be an issue in the X6. And the seating positions are lower and more sports-car-like than either of those two vehicles.

And it drives like a car, because, well, it basically is, just one with a generous ceiling profile and a big, hatch-like rear end.

The BMW 3-series has remained unchanged since as long as 2005. So, it is only natural that the luxury automaker has decided to finally revamp the existing 3-series as a 2013 model. Many experts seem to agree that the new styling of the car has been modeled on the recently unveiled CS concept. Some have also suggested a fair amount of the styling from the recent 7-series induced in the car.

One thing is for sure though- the next generation 3-series will have a longer wheelbase than the earlier model. The new vehicle is also expected to be lighter than its predecessor. Also, the new car will be offered in five models rather than the usual four.

BMW’s special EfficientDynamics technology will help this car to achieve better efficiency through the use of smaller engines, low drag aerodynamics and high-tech electronics. Also, more of aluminum and similar materials will be used to construct the body of the car to make it lighter.

The present six-cylinder engines will be replaced by the turbocharged four-cylinder engines delivering anywhere between 150-170 horsepower and 150-220 pound-feet of torque. Mated to the engine will be an eight-speed transmission and efficient auxiliary systems such as heating and cooling.

One Million BMW 1-Series Built, M1 On The Way?

BMW`s entry level 1-Series has been a huge hit since its debut in 2004. The 1-Series has been so popular that BMW recently built the one millionth car. The plant where most are built in Leipzig, Germany can build up to 700 cars a day, according to Motorauthority. BMW may be drumming up even more excitement over the 1-Series with a high performance M1 soon, according to Autoblog.

The 1-Series comes in two flavors in America. The entry level 128i starts at $29,150, meaning that you can just barely buy a BMW for under $30,000. The sportier BMW 135i has a 3.0 liter twin-turbo inline six engine that makes 300-horsepower and gives the car a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds.

Autoblog spotted a modified and slightly camouflaged 1-Series doing laps of the Nurburgring in Germany this week. From the pictures, it looks like the car will have much wider tires along with some styling changes borrowed from the M3 that set it apart from the run-of-the-mill 128i and 135i cars. No news has come from BMW on the high performance 1-Series, so it remains to be seen whether the new model will be an M1 or just an M package for the 135i.

NY Auto Show Best Cars: BMW 5 Series

The world badly needs the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which got its U.S. introduction at the New York International Auto Show. Without the new BMW 5 Series, competitors wouldn't be able to run ads saying "brakes faster than a BMW 5 Series" ... "more shoulder room in back than a 5 Series" ... "tighter turning radius" and so forth. Everybody's better than BMW in one facet. The BMW 5 Series is the benchmark for mid-size luxury-sport sedans and the 2011 model continues the sporty handling flair of a BMW 3 Series while picking up as much room inside of the last-generation BMW 7 Series, especially in formerly cramped rear seat. BMW worked out some of the design quirks on the 2003-2009 model and it may be the handsomest BMW sedan you can buy today. With prices starting in the low 50s (most likely decreasing compared to 2009s with similar content), this is not the car for everyone. But it will be the benchmark.

2011 BMW 5 Series

The 5 Series amends much of its predecessor’s cutline-and-eyebrow styling. In my estimation, it looks as good as the beloved 1997-2003 E39 5 Series – all the reserved elegance of the 7 Series without that car’s pointlessly wide lower air dam. The taillights, in particular, are a job well done.

The cabin feels on the smaller side for a midsize sport sedan. The rear seats have long cushions and ample thigh support, but 6-footers will find legroom tight, particularly compared with the Mercedes E-Class’ voluminous backseat. Materials up front are good, though BMW’s penchant for businesslike austerity will distinguish the car from its Japanese luxury competition. (Even among the Germans, the 5 Series feels all business.)

Like in the 7 Series, the 5’s climate settings illuminate out of inky black surroundings that you’d otherwise mistake for some sort of trim piece. Behold, there are real cupholders below – not the sturdiest ones, but worlds better than the flip-out dashboard cupholders employed elsewhere in BMW’s lineup.

For some time now, the automaker’s electronic automatic shifter has never been my favorite. The new 5 feels more ergonomic, complete with a gathered boot at its base. Still, its operation imparts the same robotic sensation. God bless BMW for still offering a stick shift on the 535i and 550i, though. Here’s hoping it will be more like the short-throw unit in the Z4 and less like the rubbery manual in the outgoing 5 Series.

The first is actually an expansion of what was previously known as the Heritage Workshop. BMW AG, the world's largest premium car maker, said yesterday that its first-quarter sales in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan more than doubled to 34,179 units, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

In the first quarter, sales of BMW- and Mini-brand cars reached 11,902 units and 1,853 units, respectively, the company said.

BMW sold 12,662 vehicles in March, the luxury auto maker said.

The auto maker sold a record 90,536 BMW-brand and Mini-brand cars in mainland China last year, 38% more than the 65,822 it sold in 2008.

For 2010, BMW expects double-digit growth in China, said Ian Robertson, head of sales and marketing.

2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe SPy Shots

2011 reveal looking more and more likely. We’ve been seeing prototypes for the Convertible variant for more than a year now but this is the first time that the Coupe has been spotted.

Comparing previous spy shots of the Convertible and these latest shots of the Coupe, several clear differences can be seen. The rear side windows are a different shape on the two cars, the roof profile is also slightly different and the rear window on the Coupe is slightly wider than the one on the Convertible as well.

This suggests that BMW is preparing two separate 6-Series models unlike what it did for the latest Z4 Roadster, which now only comes with a folding hard-top roof. BMW will sell both a 6-Series Coupe and a 6-Series Convertible with a conventional soft-top roof.

BMW to Supply Diesels for Police Car Venture

Carbon Motors and the BMW Group announced at a Washington news conference on Monday that the companies had reached an agreement for BMW to supply 240,000 turbo diesel engines for a police car that Carbon Motors would produce called the E7.

Although there are working prototypes with BMW engines, the E7 remains somewhat speculative. Stacy Stephens, the company’s co-founder, said Carbon Motors, of Connersville, Ind., would begin building the car three years after closing on a $310 million loan from the Energy Department that the company applied for last August. “We’re extremely confident of being awarded that loan,” he said. “We’ve made it past the first milestone.”

Carbon Motors has been working since 2003 on the concept of a police car with built-in enforcement features (the list includes automatic license plate recognition, siren, video and audio surveillance of the rear compartment, remote start, integrated shotgun mounts, spot lights and special police seats). The company, should it get the government loan, would provide 1,550 direct jobs (and thousands more indirectly) in economically disadvantaged Connersville, Mr. Stephens said. The company would occupy a 1.8 million-square-foot plant vacated by the auto supplier Visteon in 2007.

The fourth-generation Sports Activity Vehicle features the new xDrive50i and xDrive35i, with all-new powertrains, joining the existing diesel-powered xDrive35d X5.

The gasoline X5s feature BMW’s new eight-speed automatic transmission for better acceleration and fuel efficiency, says the automaker.

BMW says its designers and engineers have added more than 4,000 new parts to the 2011 X5, including new front and rear bumpers, new front fenders, new headlights and new tail lights for a fresh new look.

The X5 also offers a 10% drop in fuel consumption and emissions, according to BMW.

This latest generation of the brand’s flagship sport-utility vehicle makes a number of substantial improvements over the departing 2010 BMW X5. Immediately obvious are the changes that have been made to the SUV’s appearance. The 2011 BMW X5 sports far more graceful sheet metal than any edition of the vehicle to come before it, with much of the 2010 BMW X5’s anonymity having been purged from the design. The front aero package is both purposeful and sleek, and the truck’s entire look has been cleaned up dramatically to present a much simpler and more engaging face to the world.

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons to like the new BMW X5. In addition to its fresh looks, the crossover SUV has been gifted with two new drivetrain options for the 2011 model year. Driving the BMW X1

One look at BMW’s hot, new X1 and I was hooked. I’ve always been partial to cars with their lower center of gravity and resultant more engaging driving dynamics. Still, with three fast-growing children and our unfortunately less-than-perfect roads, I sometimes hanker for the packaging versatility and go-anywhere capability of an SUV.

I’m sure a lot of people find themselves in this quandary, as can be seen by the growing number of so-called “crossovers” – vehicles that combine the attributes (and body styles) of a car with that of an SUV or a minivan.

The Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Outback are prime examples (the latter’s Forester used to be perfect embodiment of a crossover, but the latest model has evolved more into a bonafide compact SUV).

From any angle, the BMW X1 looks more like a bulked-up 1-series 5-door hatch than its X3 (slightly) bigger brother. It’s about four inches shorter, two inches lower and almost five inches narrower than the X3 (or for a more common comparison, three inches shorter, an inch narrower, and a whopping five inches lower than a Honda CR-V). The X1’s huge, gaping twin kidney grilles hark to the angry snout of the Z4, again tying it to its Bavarian car heritage.

Even with my chocolate brown (officially called Marrakesh Brown) model’s black highlights, BMW stylists painted the lower horizontal edge of the front bumper a striking silver in the best touring car racing tradition.

New BMW 330i Price Rs 33.4 lakh

BMW has launched two new variants under its 3 series sedan category. BMW [ Images ] India [ Images ] president Peter Kronschnabl launched BMW 320d corporate edition (diesel) and the BMW 330i (petrol) as the two new BMW 3 Series sedans.

The cars are being manufactured in the company's Indian plant and would be available across its 17 dealerships.

According to Kronschnabl the BMW 330i would cost about Rs 33.4 lakh (Rs 3.34 million) and the BMW320d corporate edition would cost about Rs 23.95 lakh (Rs 2.39 million).

Kronschnabl is quite positive about maintaining the growth story of BMW in India and was heard saying, "In 2008, we sold 2,908 cars which grew by 24 per cent in 2009 to 3,619."

BMW has lots of expectations from the BMW 320d corporate edition. According to Kronschnabl, "Though 330i is available now, we think our growth will be driven by the corporate edition variant. We hope we will be able to sell couple of hundreds of the car (corporate edition)."

According to a survey carried out by Creditplus, used BMW 3 Series vehicles were the most sought-after autos on the second hand market last year, narrowly beating competition from the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Astra.

"The list has once again confirmed that the BMW 3 series is one of the most desirable used cars on the market," it was stated.

Some of the reasons for the vehicle''s popularity were laid out in a review of a used BMW 3 Series in the Sunday Times.

Motoring journalist Jason Dawe noted that the car has the ability to put the smile on a driver''s face – thanks to its power, seamless gear changes and roomy cabin.

Other vehicles to feature among the most popular used car buys of 2009 were the Renault Megane, the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Fiesta, it was stated.

BMW To Develop A Rival For Audi A1 Based On Mini Platform

World’s first premium small class model in the Audi history raised a lot of questions in BMW camp, who thinks more at the birth of a rival, ready to share the same platform and same with components of the concern brothers over the English Channel, named Mini.

BMW is ready to set to hit the racing tracks with a new arresting race-car that it had been working on since last year - BMW Z4 GT3. Its official images were recently revealed. With the features of central-locking, ABS breaking and elective air-conditioning, the fresh additions are a roll-cage.

The appearance of the motor itself makes it look "fast", even if not moving as it has been given a finishing touch in Munich racing white, blue and red, tailored into a track styling pack.

BMW has stuck into its long bonnet, 4.0-litre V8 and with the Type-408 ECU e and power 400 control units which results in 480 horsepower and the power can noticeably hit 353kW. The six-speed transmission transfers all the sounds to the rear wheels. The folding roof mechanism has been removed to reduce the weight.

Z4 GT3 is expected to be on sale in the market by the second half of this year and estimated cost will be 298,000 Euro or $589,000NZ.

BMW's 2011 model updates are well underway, with the X1, Z4, 1-Series, 3-Series, and 5-Series already revealed in one form or another. Now it's time for the 2011 BMW X6 (2010 model pictured), which gets the new N55 twin-scroll single-turbo and an eight speed transmission among other updates.

The new eight-speed automatic is found throughout the range, replacing the six-speed unit previously found in the vehicle, though the monstrous 555-horsepower X6 M isn't part of the update. Europeans will still get the xDrive30d, a smaller diesel than what we'll see here in the U.S., though the xDrive40d looks to up the output a bit over the current X5 xDrive35d. Both the 30d and 40d use the same 2,993 cc displacement, but the 30d adds a single turbo, while the 40d runs two turbos and more boost pressure for a 306-horsepower and 442-pound-foot rating. No word on U.S. availability of the X6 xDrive40d has been released yet.

Gasoline-powered 2011 X6s include the xDrive35i and xDrive50i. The 35i gets the updated N55 single-turbo, twin-scroll engine, while the 50i uses the same 4.4-liter direction-injection turbo V-8 found in the current vehicle. The addition of the eight-speed auto ought to help improve fuel efficiency for both. Acceleration in either model is brisk, with claimed 0-62 mph times of 6.7 seconds for the xDrive35i and 5.4 seconds for the xDrive50i.

Auto Start-Stop technology

Another interesting feature of this high performance vehicle is the addition of the Auto Start-Stop technology, which is made available in all thee variants of the M3 i.e. the coupe, convertible and the sedan.

BMW has made this technology available in both the manual and the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission options. BMW elucidates the advantage by stating that this system shuts down the engine when the car comes to a stop, hence enabling the BMW M3 to save about 8% on CO2 emissions. Fuel consumption is also reduced to 11.2 litres per 100 kilometers (M3 Coupe with DCT). So now it'll be an unusual experience as on stopping the M3, instead of hearing a rumbly V8 note, there will be silence!

BMW Recalls 500 X5, X6 Vehicles on Windshield Defect

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world’s largest maker of luxury cars, is recalling a total of about 500 X5 and X6 sport-utility vehicles in the U.S. because the windshield may not be attached properly.

The vehicles, which were made between Dec. 14 and Dec. 16, experienced a “problem” in the process of gluing on the windshield, spokesman Andreas Lampka said today in a telephone interview. The issue doesn’t affect SUVs sold in other markets, he said.

The recall was announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on its Web site. The stability of the roofs of the models could be affected in a rollover accident, the NHTSA said.

Yes, and this spring, the German luxury automaker will celebrate the X5’s new decade by introducing its latest makeover. The Geneva auto show in early March will be the refreshed S.U.V.’s official international debut, with its North American introduction the following month at the New York auto show. It goes on sale in the United States shortly thereafter.

BMW says the new generation X5 is not as underwhelmingly evolutionary as it may look; it is really revolutionary, with some 4,000 new, noncarryover parts. Two new model designations also join the lineup: the xDrive 50i and xDrive 35i. Perhaps the most significant of those changes will be under the hood, where new turbocharged engines will make mischievous amounts of additional power.

BMW has face-lifted the X5 for model year 2011, adding new engines, and will put the new crossover on sale in the U.S. shortly after its debut in early April at the 2010 New York Auto Show.

The 2011 X5 will come in three flavors for the U.S.: the familiar xDrive35d turbodiesel, plus the new xDrive35i and xDrive50i.

The range-topping X5 xDrive50i features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 from the X6, delivering 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, mated to a new eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW quotes 0-60-mph acceleration in 5.3 seconds. Prices will start at $59,275.

The X5 xDrive35i gets a new single-turbo 3.0-liter direct-injection inline six-cylinder engine rated at 300 hp. Fitted with an eight-speed automatic, the car will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Prices will start at $46,675.

While BMW spent last year adding upgraded engines to its lineup, the X5 sat untouched, forced to enjoy only the 3.0-liter diesel found in the xDrive35d. A potent mill, yes, but the other Bimmers received a more efficient, single turbo inline-six; if they didn't, more power came to their twin-turbo setup. A 400-hp twin-turbo V-8 headlined the X6, while the M versions of it and the X5 boasted a silly 555-hp. Now, the standard X5 gets its turn: Along with an exterior refresh, the 2011 BMW X5 receives two new powertrains.

At the top of the hierarchy is the X5 xDrive50i, which features BMW's all-aluminum, twin-turbo V-8. With direct injection, variable valve timing, and its "reverse flow" setup (the turbochargers rest in the valley between the cylinders), the engine makes 400-hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, the latter from 1750 rpm to 4500 rpm. Like the X6, BMW claims acceleration to 60 mph in the X5 xDrive50i takes 5.3 seconds. Yet the X5 undercuts the current Sports Activity Coupe by $8800 by starting at $59,275.

According to info gathered by the folks from InsideLine, a version of the slick BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept that has taken the automotive world by a storm when introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show, last September, is going to hit the production lines and should be on the road sometime in 2013.

The company’s first fuel efficiency and emission management vehicle, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept is a plug-in hybrid with a three cylinder turbodiesel engine working along with two electric motors, developing a total of 262 kW (356 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. The 2+2 coupe is capable to go naught to 62mph in a quick 4.8 seconds on its way to an electronically limited 155mph, consuming on average only 3.76 liters/100km (that’s some 62.6 mpg) and emitting 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

The one thing you can be sure of when you walk out of a BMW news conference is that you'll have plenty of information. Your head aches from it. Your ears ring with it. Your jaws are sore from swallowing it whole like a snake.

I fairly staggered out of the press briefing at a hotel here laden with facts about the company's latest personal executive sedan, the 2011 BMW 5-series. This numerical disquisition will soon be yours, so brace yourself.

But here's a number that absolutely fascinated me. According to BMW execs, the 5-series -- the company's second-best-selling model after the multifarious 3-series -- represents 50% of the company's total profit. Buyers typically heap pricey luxury, technology and sport packages on top of the $50,000 base price, resulting in a tidy windfall for BMW, if not an F5 tornado of money.

Consider what this fact suggests about 5-series buyers: These people are buying the sedan because of its size -- comfortable but still fairly intimate -- and because of what the Germans love to call "sportivity." These buyers also yearn for the cutting-edge technological spritz that comes as standard equipment in the flagship 7-series, the next segment up, and are willing to pay extra to get it.

Most of you probably know about the MINI-E, an electric version of the MINI made by BMW to do real-world EV testing (and exploit a CARB loophole, some say). BMW says that it will repeat the experiment, but this time with the ActiveE, a converted BMW series 1 coupe.

"The BMW Concept ActiveE has allowed BMW to explore new vehicle packaging solutions and components which will be crucial to the success of the Megacity Vehicle. The intelligent integration of drive components within the existing vehicle package of the BMW 1 Series Coupe offers the opportunity to provide four full-size seats and a luggage compartment with a capacity of 200 litres / 7 cu ft. The motor, specially developed for the model and located in the rear axle, delivers 125 kW/170 hp and provides maximum torque of 250 Nm / 184 lb-ft. It accelerates the vehicle in less than 9 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (0-60 mph in approx. 8.5 seconds)."

Sounds like a more practical car than the MINI-E for every day driving.

One of the downside of being an EV is that the ActiveE weights about 3,900 pounds, but weight distribution is close to 50/50, so handling should still be decent. I suspect that this high weight is partly due to the fact that this is a conversion job and not a car that was designed from the ground up to be an EV (for example, the Nissan LEAF is estimated to weight about 2,800 lbs).

"The electric drive system draws its energy from new, advanced lithium-ion battery pack developed jointly by BMW and the co-operation partner SB LiMotive especially for the BMW Concept ActiveE. They enable a range of approx. 160 kilometres (100 miles) in everyday use. An intelligent battery management system helps achieve this range largely independently of external climatic conditions. Additionally, the charging period required for the lithium-ion batteries is very short. On the European power grid, the battery pack can be fully charged in just 3 hours at a wall box with a current of 50 ampere at 230/240 volts. In North America, using a high-current (32 ampere continuous) residential wall box, the charge time is about 4.5 hours."

Range is similar to the Nissan LEAF (but the LEAF will be made in bigger numbers than the ActiveE, and will probably be a lot less expensive).

Its tedious name notwithstanding, the sDrive35is promises to be the most entertaining model of BMW's Z4 roadster.

An upgraded version of BMW's stalwart 3.0-liter straight-six engine produces 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque from just 1,500 r.p.m. An electronically controlled overboost feature on the twin turbochargers can crank torque up to 369 pound-feet for brief blasts of ultimate acceleration.

The roadster hits 60 m.p.h. in just 4.7 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 m.p.h.

BMW Concept ActiveE

The ActiveE is a electric vehicle concept based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe. It will follow a similar pilot test program as is underway with the Mini E, putting private citizens and fleet users behind the wheel.

Features of the ActiveE include rear-wheel drive and a maximum speed of 90 mph. It will have a similar driving range of 100 miles on a single charge as the Mini E. A new arrangement of the drive components allow for four full-sized seats, plus a luggage compartment. (The Mini E is a two seater, due to the battery packaging.) The electric motor is integrated in the rear axle, power electronics positioned above the motor, and electrical energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack. Charge time with a conventional outlet is about four and a half hours.

The ActiveE will feature remote functions such as using a cell phone to check charge status, search for charging stations, and turn on heating and cooling functions.

Complete with an interesting all-blue circuit graphics, a set of interesting blue-trimmed tires, and slightly over-sized branding on the sides, BMW debuted its EV 1-Series concept, the ActiveE Concept at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The ActiveE is a result of BMW’s constant efforts at research and development to produce a concept car of electric mobility intended for everyday use by individuals and select fleet customers in urban areas.

With an instant pick-up of 100km/hr in 9 secs (0-60 mph in approx. 8.5 seconds), its highest speed is 145km/hr and the maximum range remains just under 160km or 100 miles. The speed is definitely affected – it is half a second slower than its earlier electric version. It uses a 170 horsepower motor fixed at the rear axle with a torque of 184 lb-ft making it a rear-wheel drive, thereby, preserving the classic BMW feel of sheer pleasure while driving.

The other features include a 125 kilo-Watt motor provided by a lithium ion battery that is liquid cooled. Charge time of the battery varies depending on the location – In North America, using a high-current (32 ampere continuous) residential wall box, the charge time is about 4.5 hours. While in Europe, the battery pack can be fully charged in as little as 3 hours with a current of 50 ampere at 230/240 volts.

Sometimes you can’t slide a fag paper between Audi and its arch rival BMW. Both claim to be the world’s number one premium car maker – and then you have to read the small print.

BMW sold 1.29 million cars last year across the world including 216,500 MINIs and more than 1,000 Rolls-Royces. Audi sold 955,000, which leaves it lagging slightly.

3-series and those lovely run-flats. The tires are garbage, and for me they ruin an otherwise mostly pleasant driving experience.

Look, I like this car. It has all the attributes of the sporty 3-series sedan and thus there's a lot to like here. It responds eagerly and entertainingly to my steering inputs and puts down its power as smooth as any car out there. Said power is lively, and this engine makes terrific sounds.

The interior quality is high, the seats are supportive, and the car looks terrific.

The wagon version is my favorite 3-series in the range, but the ride is ruined by the run-flats. That and this is supposed to be the entry-level 3, yet costs it near fifty grand! I think I'd go with the Audi A4 wagon with the 2.0 turbo and the DSG transmission.

2011 BMW 740i and 740Li

We’re accustomed to seeing eight- and twelve-cylinder engines nestled beneath the hood of a BMW 7-series, but it’s been a long time -- nearly a decade, in fact -- since we’ve seen BMW’s flagship powered by a six-cylinder.

For 2011, however, such a model returns. Both the new 740i and long-wheelbase 740Li make use of BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6, found in the likes of the 335i. Power is boosted slightly to 315 hp at 5800 rpm, and 330 lb ft of torque from 1600 through 4500 rpm. As no X-drive model is in the cards, power is routed to the rear wheels via a ZF-sourced six-speed automatic transmission.

Apart from the powertrain, there’s hardly a difference between the 740i and its V-8 and V-12 siblings. All options available on the 750 and 760 (including the M Sport package and upgraded rear seats) are available on the 740i and 740Li.

BMW has yet to announce pricing for either the 740i or 740Li, but we’d expect a short-wheelbase car to sticker just underneath the 750i’s base price of $82,280. Look for both the 2011 740i and 740Li to arrive in U.S. dealers in the spring of 2010.

This year at the Delhi AutoExpo, BMW India is planning to exhibit its complete range of products in India along with its new models slated for India launch in next two years. The German luxury car maker was conspicuously absent from the Tokyo Motor Show held earlier this year. However, every car maker including luxury car makers like Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo are expected to mark their presence in full force at Delhi.

BMW India will introduce its new 400 bhp, twin-turbo direct-injected 4.4-liter V8 550i Gran Turismo. This model is a perfect combination of sedan and versatility of an SUV. The car was first showcased at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year as a concept car and the production model was codenamed as F07. Apart from the Gran Turismo, compact SUV BMW X1 will also make an appearance with the new 760Li with 535bhp twin-turbo, 6.0-liter, V12 engine. Besides all this, the new BMW X6 M with the 4.4-liter, 555 bhp V8 engine will also be displayed at the Delhi Auto Expo.

Other BMW models that will be on display at the BMW pavilion will be BMW X5, BMW 3 Series including 154bhp 320i, 211bhp 325i and the 320d, BMW 5 series including 525i, 530i, 520d and the M5 and the recently launched BMW Z4 Roadster.

BMW 535i Gran Turismo coming to Detroit

At the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, BMW will show its new Concept ActiveE alongside the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, as well as the North American unveiling of the twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine version of the 2011 BMW 740i and 740Li sedans. The German automaker just announced that it will also debut the 6-cylinder turbocharged version of the BMW 535i Gran Turismo.

The 535i Gran Turismo will be powered by BMW’s 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged engine making 300-hp at 5,800 rpm with a peak torque of 300 lb-ft available from 1,200 to 5,000 rpm. The engine will allow the 535i Gran Turismo to go from 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

“This is the same level of performance as the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of VALVETRONIC, this new engine will be even more fuel efficient,” BMW said in a statement.

The 2011 BMW M5 was spied undergoing testing at the Nordschleife.

Speculation was abound on whether the M5 would continue to use the exotic V10 powerplant or switch to the new turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 which made its bebut in X5M and X6M. However, now BMW officials have confirmed that the new M5 will be equipped with the turbocharged V8.

The twin-turbocharged unit develops 555HP at 6,000 rpm and 680Nm or 501 pound feet of torque available between 1500 & 5650 rpm, which is more than enough to make the BMW M5 a strong contender in the high-end next generation super sedan category. It is speculated that the direct injection V8 may be improved further, boosting the output almost to the 600HP mark. The new V8 will not only outrun the V10 in power, but will also be lighter in weight, compact in size & more fuel efficiency with lower CO2 emissions.

2010 BMW Z4 GT3 will hide under the hood the 4.0-liter V8 engine currently on BMW M3, but because it is developed under the Motorsport division’s guidance it has 480 HP. Actually it is the same engine on the BMW M3 GT2 and, as well, it is synchronized with a six-speed sequential transmission. Anyway, don’t even dare to dream driving this car without a racing driver licence and without a FIA wild card, this model being built particularly for GT3 class.

We don’t know exactly how it will look like or detailed specifications so far, in the press release being mentioned only the ECU 408 and Power 400 electric units, to control the engine’s pulse during the race. It is also mentioned that the air conditioner is optional and that the price will be just €298,000 tax included (about $426,000 ). This modes is offered to the private teams.

BMW Motorsport will be offering a brand new, lust-worthy model to the private race teams. The new beast in BMW’s racing lineup is the BMW Z4 GT3 which is fitted with a M3-derived V8 engine. This latest edition of the automaker’s customer race offering will start entertaining its fans from next year. The details of the car were officially revealed by BMW Motorsport on its dedicated website.

The factory-built Z4 will use an up-rated version of the M3’s 4.0-L V8 engine to burn the tracks. The unit easily generates 480 horsepower and also combines some innovative solutions from BMW. BMW’s flagship sedan is getting a power dump — not bump — for 2011. The 740i and 740Li will pack BMW’s superb twin-turbo V-6 engine used in the 3 and 5 Series. In the 740s, it will produce 315 horsepower and is teamed to a six-speed automatic.

We’re not sure why BMW thinks this is a good idea. No other luxury car in this class features a six-cylinder, even a turbocharged one. We’re also not sure on pricing, but it probably will be north of $70,000 since the 750i starts at $80,455.

At either price buyers may demand a V-8 — fuel economy be damned.

We recently tested a BMW 535 wagon with the same engine producing 300 hp and found it to be plenty powerful. The 750 weighs 450 pounds more than the 535 wagon, but the turbo engine should bring the 7 Series’ weight down slightly. The 740 will be rear-wheel drive only and pack regenerative braking technology; the 740Li will be an extended model, just like in the rest of the range, for more interior room.

Even if performance is acceptable, will the 7 Series buyer be content with the 740i badge on the back? Or will they pull an Ari Gold who famously put a higher-end badge on his wife’s luxury sedan in the popular HBO series “Entourage.”

BMW has already put its toe in the water when it comes to electric vehicles with the Mini E, which it leased to 500 customers for a trial period. Now, the automaker will take an all-electric drivetrain and toss it into its 1 Series design, which it’s calling the BMW Concept ActiveE.

Debuting in 2011 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the ActiveE puts up similar numbers to a few other electric vehicles we’ve already heard so much about, such as the Nissan Leaf. The ActiveE’s lithium-ion battery will have a range of 100 miles per charge and a recharging time of 4.5 hours, BMW says. The difference, of course, is that BMW promises its premium driving experience along with that luxury feel. Judging from images of the interior, BMW doesn’t plan to let the ActiveE disappoint in that regard.

Like it did with the Mini E, BMW plans to conduct field tests with the ActiveE in North America and Europe next month to compile real world data before moving forward with full-fledged production. This is no doubt a way to see how the electric vehicle market develops over the next five years. If governments kick in with the proper support, infrastructure will follow, and — this is kind of important — luxury buyers will actually want to opt for a 1 Series ride that can go only 100 miles before you need to plug it in for 4.5 hours.

Interestingly, BMW says any electrically powered serial production vehicle based on the ActiveE will be marketed under a sub-brand of BMW sometime within the first half of the next decade.

BMW Goes Electric

Boom!

That’s the sound of another round being fired in the electric vehicle war, and it’s a big one: BMW is getting in on the action in a big way. The Germans are rolling into the Detroit auto show next month with the slick Concept ActiveE and hinting it might see production. It looks mighty close to being showroom-ready as it is.

The Concept ActiveE is the latest car out of Project i, BMW’s campaign to to develop low-emission city cars and a sustainable means of producing them. It follows the Mini E electric car out the door, and looks like a far more practical automobile even with the garish graphics.

ActiveE is based on the BMW 1-Series small cars. BMW says it is a continuation of the company’s green R&D activities and says it promises “CO2-free mobility.” Yes, yes, we know — at the tailpipe.

When BMW pulled out of Formula 1, many people scoffed when said the reason for quitting was to dedicate those resources to developing cleaner, greener cars using what it learned on the track. But BMW might have been right. We’ve seen a slew of cool hardware from BMW, including the Vision Efficientdynamics Concept and an ultra-efficient diesel, and continued field tests of the Mini E in Europe and America. And now, with the BMW Concept ActiveE, it looks like BMW is on the cusp of taking on rides like the Nissan Leaf electric car and Toyota’s new plug-in Prius.

The rear wheel drive ActiveE promises to be a fun driver that packs a slew of interesting technology. It’s propelled by a new synchronous motor cranking out 125 kilowatts (170 horsepower) and 184 pound-feet of torque. Juice is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack (of undisclosed size) BMW developed with SB LiMotive. Said battery is said to feature a new stable temperature regulation function to optimize performance.

ActiveE tips the scales at 1,800 kilos (3,900 pounds), which is a bit tubby for a car of its size but not terribly so for an EV. BMW says it kept the center of gravity low and evened out the weight distribution. Combined with the rear wheel drive platform, BMW says, ActiveE “has everything it requires to provide the dynamic driving properties and agile handling in the style of the BMW 1 Series.”

BMW says the little EV should accelerate from zero to 60 km/h (37 mph) in less than 4.5 seconds and do zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in less than 9. Top speed is limited to 145 km/h (90 mph). BMW says real-world range is about 160 km / 100 miles, depending on conditions. Flog it like a proper BMW and you’ll probably see less.

Charging of the lithium-ion battery pack is handled via conventional power outlets or a special wall box. In Europe, the battery pack can be fully charged at a 50 ampere high-current power outlet in as little as 3 hours. And in North America, using a 32 ampere continuous high-current residential wall box, the charge time is around 4.5 hours.

And just everybody will know how cool you are, BMW has added some styling elements. That color is called “Liquid White metallic,” and while it looks sharp the “Electric Blue” circuit graphics are garish. We do like the alloy wheels.

On the inside there’s the usual design tweaks like leather seats with embossed graphics and blue accentuated seams as well as body-color interior accents. The instrument panel does away with the usual gauges and displays found in cars with gas engines and now features display items specific to electric drive.

Look for a production version at the Paris auto show in September. Autoweek says BMW plans to lease the ActiveE to selected customers by the end of the year, which is the same model it followed for the Mini-E. It’s basically a big R&D project to further refine the technology before offering it to the masses. No word on what the ActiveE will cost, but the monthly lease on the Mini-E runs $850 a month. Figure you’ll pay about the same for the ActiveE.

The 2011 BMW 7-Series is bringing back six-cylinder engines.

BMW confirms today that its range-topping 7-Series sedan will get two additions in 2011. The new 740i and 740iL sedans will join the existing ActiveHybrid, eight-cylinder, and twelve-cylinder models in the 7-Series lineup.

The new engines are twin-turbo in-line six-cylinders, with the short- or long-wheelbase body being the primary difference between the two. The new engine will put out 315 horsepower at 5800 rpm, and 330 pound-feet of torque from 1600-4500 rpm.

BMW does not confirm it, but the powertrain seems technically similar to the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine in today's 3-Series sedan, which would mean a displacement of 3.0 liters--not the 4.0 liters indicated by the badge. It's mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

BMW last offered a six-cylinder in the 7-Series in the 735i model, which joined the lineup in 1988 and was sold until 1992.

The New York Times calls it a bold decision:

"Putting the turbo straight-6 in the 740i and 740Li could be an even bolder decision. Owners of large luxury sedans are used to V-8s and even V-12s. Although BMW has upped the power output to 315 horsepower in this latest iteration, the 7 Series could appear lacking to German luxury car customers used to hearing the deep grunt of big V-8s."

Lexus built a hybrid LS a long time ago.

Mercedes-Benz offers a hybrid S-Class and the Fisker Karma S Plug-In hybrid luxury cars are almost ready for production.

In an automotive world that is rapidly going all electric or hybrid, offering a 7 Series 6 cylinder turbo seems more backward than bold to many who see the future of cars as moving away from fossil fuel consumption.

BMW is finding more places to put its magnificent twin-turbocharged in-line-6 engine. The latest host is the 7 Series luxury sedan.

The turbo straight-6 first appeared in the BMW 335i coupe. When the engine later appeared in the 135i, the pairing almost seemed like overkill — 300 horsepower in a small lightweight sports car? It was a bold move, but also a fantastic one to reaffirm BMW as a performance-minded company.

Putting the turbo straight-6 in the 740i and 740Li could be an even bolder decision. Owners of large luxury sedans are used to V-8s and even V-12s. Although BMW has upped the power output to 315 horsepower in this latest iteration, the 7 Series could appear lacking to German luxury car customers used to hearing the deep grunt of big V-8s.

Nevertheless, it is the sign of the times. Many automakers are preferring fewer cylinders and phasing out V-8 engines. Ford is using its turbocharged EcoBoost 4- and 6-cylinder engines for traditionally V-6 and V-8 applications. And the recently released 2010 Toyota 4Runner will not have a V-8 option.

BMW adds a historical slant to its decision. In a news release, the company highlights the original 7 Series, which came with an in-line-6 when it was launched in 1977. In the United States, the 1978 733i came with a 3.2-liter in-line-6 (later replaced with an updated version making 218 horsepower).

But it’s been more than a decade since the 7 Series had a 6-cylinder engine option in the United States. The current-generation 7 Series was launched last year with a twin-turbocharged V-8 in the 750i. The 760i is also available with a twin-turbocharged V-12. Even the hybrid version of the 7 Series, the ActiveHybrid 7, which is due in the second quarter of next year, is equipped with a twin-turbo V-8.

A little more than a year ago, the all-electric Mini E stole the limelight at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. Now, BMW has released details of its next all-electric concept car, which will formally debut at next month's Detroit Auto Show.

The BMW Concept ActiveE electric car is based on the BMW 1-Series Coupe, and it's a full four-seater. That contrasts with the Mini E, whose back-seat space was largely taken up by the large lithium-ion battery pack.

In fact, says BMW, the passenger compartment is identical to that of a liquid-fueled 1-Series Coupe, with no changes in the head, leg, and shoulder space dimensions. The Concept ActiveE adds a few unique styling touches to what is recognizably a 1-Series Coupe, with a closed rear apron (no exhaust pipe!), aerodynamic alloy wheels, and blue accents including a blue ring in the tire sidewall.

Even though we were waist high in acid wash denim and the world was dancing to the sounds of Madonna and Michael Jackson, there was little to groove about in the car business. Mazda changed all of that with the introduction of the Miata, late in 1989. After its success, the 90s saw the floodgates open with a whole raft of roadsters like the Mercedes Benz SLK, to the Porsche Boxster and the BMW Z3. The Z3 made way for the Z4 and now we have the latest second generation Z4. Many of the 90s cars were very basic and almost crude by today's standards. This new Z4 is light years ahead of the original Z3, with more power, better control and a slick new retractable hardtop.

The Skin

I've been hard on BMW for their styling over the last several years. I feel that BMW lost its way with awkwardly styled cars like the previous BMW 7 Series, the current 5 Series and the last Z4. Former BMW head designer Chris Bangle was pushing the envelope with fashion-forward designs. The fact that the latest designs have returned to the sophisticated and athletic cars I have always loved from BMW is proof that they went too far. This latest Z4 is stunning. The very long nose, improved taillights and clean side profile is sculpted to resemble the impressive BMW Z8. Gone are the side creases and other attempts to make the Z4 edgy. It didn't need any of that; the basic shape exudes sex appeal and speed. The Z4 is sold with 17-inch wheels but larger 18 or 19-inch wheels are offered.

The Cockpit

Before focusing on the interior, the new retractable hardtop must be mentioned. This slick unit is automatically operated and stores neatly into the trunk. One would expect that there would be absolutely no storage when the roof is down but, remarkably, there is a useful space. Because run-flat tires have been used, there is no spare tire, so more space can be dedicated to the trunk. The cabin is simple and refreshing and a major improvement from the last Z4. Once again influences from the Z8 show up with rotary dials for the heat, fan and ventilation controls, plus a retro styled steering wheel. The stark and unattractive dash in the older model has been improved, with plenty of aluminum trim and soft touch materials. The seats are very supportive but they sit very low in the car so getting in and out requires that the driver and passenger slide in and out.

The Ride

What sets this latest Z4 apart from BMW roadsters of old is the inclusion of the same 3.0L turbo 6-cylinder, which has won several engineering awards (International engine of the year for 2007 and 2008) and is used extensively in other BMW products. This 300hp engine, along with the new 7-speed double clutch automatic turns a nice touring car into a bullet on wheels; BMW claims a run to 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds. When the transmission is shifted manually, with the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, there is no perceivable delay in shifts up or down. The only sensation is a beautiful exhaust gurgle, the same kind of sound heard on a racing car. This along with the ability to select driving settings for the suspension, engine, steering and suspension can transform the Z4 from a rocket to relaxing with the touch of a button. For buyers who don't require all-out performance the base Z4 is fitted with a very lively 3.0L 6-cylinder with 255hp.

BMW cranks even more power out of the twin turbo-charged engine in its Z4.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35i is an excellent sports car, but BMW's engineers, who must experience self-critical dreams every night about how much smoother a valve could be or whether changing the timing of a spark by a millisecond might improve combustion, couldn't leave it as is, coming up with the 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is, a higher performance version of BMW's roadster.

Like the sDrive35i, the new roadster uses a twin turbo 3-liter straight six, but BMW fitted it with a new twin turbo unit to crank up the horsepower from 306 to 335, with torque up from 295 pound-feet to 332. This engine tweaking gives the sDrive35is acceleration to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

Beyond the engine work, BMW tuned the exhaust to give a more pleasing, sports car sound. Baffles and mufflers combine to give the car what BMW describes as a "deep rumble with a focus on the low frequency sound range." People will be surprised when they see a little roadster following that exhaust note as it works its way up the street.

The sDrive35is also gets BMW's seven speed Double Clutch Transmission, a manual with two computer-controlled clutches. The driver can choose an automatic mode or shift manually, but doesn't have to push a clutch pedal. The result is no power loss at the wheels during shifts.

BMW launches slightly sportier Z4 – but there's still no Z4M

BMW has introduced a slightly quicker version of its Z4 Roadster. The previous top-of-the-range version, the sDrive35i, is joined by the sDrive35is. The additional "s" signifies a car that has 34 more horsepower and gets to 100km/h (62mph) from rest in 4.8 instead of 5.1 seconds. At £43,885, the sDrive35is costs over three thousand pounds more than the sDrive35i, but returns exactly the same 31.4mpg in official combined cycle fuel consumption tests and emits the same 210g/km of CO2 – again in official tests.

The current Z4 is a very agreeable car but one that can leave the enthusiast wishing it had a slightly harder edge – in particular, there's still no true replacement for the exhilarating Z4M version of the previous-generation model. On paper, the new sDrive35is appears to offer most of the performance the old Z4M but whether it will offer as much excitement is another matter. The introduction of the sDrive35is does, however, coincide with the introduction of an optional M Sport package of mainly cosmetic enhancements for the Z4 range, although these seem to stop a long way short of transforming the car in the way that a full "M" variant would.

Before the GT label became appended to almost any car with sporty pretensions, the words Grand Tourer referred to long-legged, cross-continent touring in some level of luxury – and for that definition this new version of the BMW 5-series surely fits the bill.

Slightly shorter than a 7-series and available with a range of powerful engines, it combines comfort with a high level of performance and reassuring handling.

Claimed by the German firm to combine an “understated coupe silhouette” with the “luxurious interior of a 7-series”, it costs from £40,810.

BMW says it is the 19th “distinct model shape to be offered in the BMW portfolio”, and that it offers headroom equivalent to that of the X5 SUV.

The rear seats can be moved 100mm fore or aft to either increase the boot space or provide greater legroom for rear seat passengers. Even with the deats in the foremost position, legroom is simply not an issue.

With the rear seats moved forwards, the seat backs folded virtually flat and the parcel shelf removed and stowed beneath the luggage compartment floor, bulkier objects can be transported. A two-piece tailgate is claimed to be a first in the premium segment.

The Gran Turismo comes with many of the EfficientDynamics technologies already present on other BMWs. Brake Energy Regeneration, which recharges the vehicle’s battery during engine over-run, is standard. Active aerodynamics also play a part in the range’s efficiency, by closing flaps behind the trademark ‘kidney’ grilles to improve the aerodynamics.

Auto show dream cars with glass doors never quite seem to graduate to reality; aside from that, a more conventional body is all that could keep this dream from becoming a latter-day M1.

What makes it tick? The Vision is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5-liter diesel engine and two electric motors. Total output is 356 horsepower, and peak torque is a body-slamming 590 pound-feet. Acceleration to 60 m.p.h. takes just 4.8 seconds, and the top speed is said to be 155. Average fuel consumption is 62.6 m.p.g., BMW says. The car has an electric-only range of 31 miles; but it is theoretically capable of more than 400 miles in combination with the fuel in its 6.6-gallon tank.

BMW AG (BMW.XE) is poised to retain the crown as the world's best-selling luxury car maker in 2009 after it reported an 11% rise in sales at its core brand in November, the latest sign that the market recovery in the premium segment is firming up.

"Since September, sales have been back on the growth track. In November we achieved another substantial increase in our global deliveries. We intend to continue this trend in December," BMW sales chief Ian Robertson said in a statement.

Sales for the BMW brand were 90,383 cars last month, with the revamped Z4 roadster and the flagship 7-series sedan achieving the highest growth rates year-on-year.

Sales of the Z4 soared to 1,760 cars from 706 in November, 2008. The 7-series sedan posted a 57% sales rise to 5,025 cars.

BMW 3-series and 5-series sales were up 3.4% and 3.7% in November at 32,230 and 14,164 vehicles, respectively.

Sales for BMW's compact 1-series models were 16,614 vehicles in November, up 11.7% on the year.

In the January-to-November period, sales for the BMW brand were down 12.8% compared with last year at 963,712 vehicles, reflecting the market woes in the first half of 2009.

Demand for luxury cars contracted sharply towards the end of 2008, causing relatively low comparative figures for last year.

State-backed scrapping incentives, which were introduced in many markets in 2009 to lure customers back into showrooms, revived demand mainly for small and compact cars rather than for big luxury vehicles.

BMW rival Audi AG (NSU.XE) saw global sales grow 8.9% on the year in November to around 82,750 vehicles, driven by rising demand for the compact Q5 sports-utility vehicle and the A5 coupe.

"Our leadership position (in China) is strengthening us. But sales figures in the Americas and Europe are also developing very well," Audi sales chief Peter Schwarzenbauer said, noting that Audi "exceeded the preceding year's (sales) figures in 42 markets in November."

Audi's January-to-November sales were down 5.4% on the same period last year at around 870,600 vehicles.

Its strong presence in the dynamic Chinese market along with a relatively small footprint in the troubled U.S. market has helped the premium brand of Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE) to narrow the gap to its two larger German peers during the industry's most dramatic downturn in decades.

On Monday, the world's second best-selling luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz reported a 19% sales rise in November to 88,600 cars, fueled by the revamped E-Class and S-Class sedans.

Global sales of the E-Class doubled last month to 15,700 vehicles. The new-generation E-Class was the company's most important launch in 2009. The car is crucial for Mercedes-Benz both in terms of sales volume and revenue per car.

"Additional sales momentum will be generated over the next few weeks by the new E-Class estate, which reached the dealerships Nov. 21 and has been a big hit with customers," Mercedes-Benz sales chief Joachim Schmidt said.

The Stuttgart-based company expects fourth-quarter car sales to be significantly higher year-on-year.

In the January-to-November period, the core brand of Daimler AG (DAI) posted a 11.6% sales decline to 914,700 cars.

However, as the possibility of the hybrid giving way to the all-electric vehicle, German automaker BMW wants to be the leader. BMW is spending more than $1 billion to develop a small car for urban drivers that will include an electric-powered version.

To test the idea and the interest, BMW is leasing 500 Mini sedans that have been modified to run on batteries. These leases will take place in New York and Los Angeles.

Who would be willing to pay a premium for a vehicle that can travel only 150 miles between charges? BMW says it had no trouble finding customers eager to shell out $850 a month to lease the modified Minis, even though the cars seat only two because batteries displace the rear seats. Driving an electric mini BMW is like driving in the future, so people are willing to pay the price.

BMW is counting on the fact that the consumers with fat wallets and impeccable taste will have no problem shelling out extra money to dirve a battery-operated BMW. The prestigious BMW name would be strong competition for Mitsubishi, Renault, and General Motors, who also plan to make battery-powered vehicles.

The electric BMW may be a ways off but chances are if BMW hits the showroom floor with an electric mini car, there will be many willing to pay the price for a hip car with an upscale brand name.

Mild Hybrid System Coming for New 5 Series

BMW will install a version of its new ActiveHybrid mild hybrid system -- featured in the 7 and 6 Series -- into the all-new BMW 5 Series. The system features an electric motor sandwiched between the V-8 motor and the eight-speed transmission, and a lithium-ion battery in the trunk.

On the 7 Series, the ActiveHybrid system improves performance versus the 750i, reducing the 0-60 time to approximately 4.8 seconds, while offering about 15-percent better fuel economy. Other advantages include an idle-stop system, which makes town driving more peaceful, and an electrically driven air-conditioner that can run for 30 minutes without the engine.

BMW sources say the hybrid system can be added to a car for about €5000 ($7500). The gap between the 7 ActiveHybrid and the standard 750i is greater than that, but the feature content of the hybrid is higher.

It is for cost reasons that BMW has no plans for a diesel hybrid – clean diesels are expensive engines. Diesels are in any case economical at light load, which is the mode where a gas engine needs the help of hybrid. Also, the company is currently selling in Europe a 3 Series diesel with 163 horsepower and 8.2-second 0-62 mph performance that matches the Mk2 Toyota Prius for CO2 emissions. An engineer explained that hybridizing such a car would add several thousand dollars to its cost while saving the driver just $150 a year, even at Europe’s high fuel prices.
